Most people think dark sand dollars are always alive, but that’s not true. A sand dollar is alive if its tiny spines are still moving. No movement = it has already passed, even if it’s still dark. Just like us, it takes time for a body to break down. Remember to never take a sand dollar unless you KNOW it’s dead, and return live ones to the water. Make sure to follow local laws as sand dollars are protected in some areas, and ethical shelling matters. 🐚💫 | Lawren Bagley

Sand dollars are abundant on the west coast during winter! It’s so hard to not take them all, but I only keep the exceptionally perfect and round ones.
