I ALWAYS want retractions to be evaluated. But how can parents decide where to take their children? SAME DAY PEDIATRICIAN / URGENT CARE ➡️ Mild subcostal retractions only ➡️Normal color, feeding okay ➡️ Respiratory rate appropriate for age ➡️ No nasal flaring or head bobbing ➡️ Baby settles when calm/asleep When retractions = ER now ➡️ Moderate to severe retractions ➡️ Multiple retraction sites (subcostal intercostal suprasternal) ➡️ Fast breathing that doesn’t improve when calm ➡️ Poor feeding
