I’m always amazed at bird’s ability to capture prey. Cormorants especially. These birds catch fish underwater by doing nothing more than chasing them down and grabbing them with their mouths. This bird caught a prized large mouth bass but can it swallow this massive fish? | Mark Smith Photography

The Osprey is still my favorite bird to photograph and film. Their abilities never stop blowing my mind, and this one? Absolutely incredible. From the high-speed, feather-perfect dive, to the insane precision of snatching a needlefish right off the surface.Even with that slippery, lively cargo, it lifts off like it’s nothing. No one else around. Just me, the bird, and a reminder that nature doesn’t stop performing. Glad I’m not a fish! | Mark Smith Photography

Now this is how you make an entrance! Seeing the full wingspan of an eagle never really gets old does it? Slowing things down and filming them in slow motion just makes the entire experience even better. From the graceful midair bank, to the delicate landing on a bed of razor sharp oysters. It’s easy to see why these birds rule the skies. | Mark Smith Photography

The ability these birds have to steer their bodies through the air is simply amazing. Controlling every single micro adjustment with their wings and feathers until they reach their intended target. In this case a wounded Hake fish that is nothing more than a snack. This bird will be back for more! | Mark Smith Photography

One of the Craziest Bird Battles I’ve Ever Seen Two truths I’ve learned from many hours photographing and filming birds, 1: Persistence Pays. 2: Birds have a tough life! Every single day is a fight for survival. Food isn’t always plentiful and when it’s scarce, fights happen. This fight for survival had many different characters and I’m very curious to hear what everyone thinks of the birds that star in this unscripted, spontaneous scene especially the “one.” You’ll know it when you see it. Ouch

I have spent many hours photographing and videotaping birds, and I’m always amazed at their ability to fly, but this one is mind-blowing. Check out how it uses its tail to make a 180-degree turn. Its entire body shifts, and each feather is being individually controlled by the bird. Who choreographed this dance? 😊 | Mark Smith Photography

One of the most common questions I get asked. Why is the Osprey your favorite bird to photograph/video? This video is the perfect example of why. Ospreys never give up. Ever. They, liked many others creatures on this wonderful planet continue their lives no matter how many insurmountable obstacles are thrown in their path. They don’t complain. They shake it off and try again and again and again until they succeed. That’s such a powerful lesson to learn. | Mark Smith Photography

Wildlife photography in Florida comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to dealing with the locals.Orlando Wetlands is a fantastic spot to see some of these “locals” up close… sometimes a little too close. If you’re out exploring the trails, roads, or paths, you need to stay alert. This video is a perfect example. While I was lying in the road filming a pair of adorable Sandhill crane chicks, a rather large alligator decided it wanted to cross right behind me. Which brings u

Every once in a while, a camera comes along that helps enhance the way I capture these amazing birds. The Sony A1 ll is the perfect example. This shot is challenging in many ways for any of today’s cameras, but the A1 ll handled it like a champ. This might sound like an ad, but it isn’t. I like to give credit where credit is due, and Sony has helped pioneer modern photography / videography by continuing to innovate and push tech further than I could have ever imagined. I know people will say it’

Once it’s locked in on a meal, nothing really seems to deter the bald eagle. With landing gear down and its talons curled into fists, the approach is a carefully balanced act of flight where each and every feather helps steer this magnificent winged beast towards its food source. I have seen these birds do this thousands of times and I can tell you that it never gets old. Every single time I stand in awe and wonder at how this all seems to just work and with each experience I learn a little bit

This is one of my favorite eagle videos. It really puts so much in perspective. First, you get to see just large or wide an eagle’s wingspan is. Second, somehow I managed to keep the bird in the frame even when it went behind the boat. Third, the boat is my fav driven by my good friend Sam from Nanook Lodge and finally my good friends artist geoffry smith and Neil got a front row seat to this close flyby. | Mark Smith Photography

I never grow tired of watching these birds do what they do best, catch fish. The amount of effort that goes into one single catch is immeasurable. From soaring through the air, to submerging themselves in a foreign underwater world to floating on the surface with an injured fish in its talons. I’ve always wondered: do sharks ever cruise up, see the chaos, and go, “Thanks for the delivery,” before snatching a two-course meal of fish and bird? Luckily for this Osprey, not today. Today, it yanked a

Yesterday I was awarded the perfect amount of wind to steer this young eagle directly in front of me and as its flight path brought it closer I quickly reverted into a teenager where I simply couldn’t control the excitement. A soft “oh… oh… oh…” built into an uncontrollable crescendo: “OH! OH! OH!!” I wanted to stay quiet. I really did. But how do you stay silent when the sky delivers something that perfect, that close? Then the bird landed on a small outcropping of exposed oysters. its massive y

When it comes to playing with food, there is no bird that does it better than the Anhinga. After they successfully spear a fish underwater, they have to somehow get their catch off their beak and into their belly. Their solution to this problem is a very interesting lesson in physics. | Mark Smith Photography

Timing is everything, isn’t it? And sometimes being in the right place at the right time feels well, timely, or even predetermined. With wildlife photography, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. The more you know about your subject, the better because it increases your chances of being where you need to be when you need to be there. There is also an element of just letting go and taking what is given to you. It’s always best to have no expectations at all when it comes to

Sometimes the catch is the perfect size for a nice inflight snack, and seeing an eagle stuff its face while flying never gets old. Add in the rain, and it gets even better. I’ve seen days where the tidal surge pushes dozens of fish to the surface, and believe it or not, the eagles slow down a bit. I remember seeing one come down to grab a fish, open its mouth to stuff its catch down its gullet, and the moment the bird opened its mouth, a fish fell out as it tried to stuff a second one in. For th

It’s been a very long time since I photographed waterfalls. I like the slower pace when compared to wildlife. I get sucked in by their beauty and spend a lot of time studying them and sometimes I find a nice composition that tames my want of structure and some sort of symmetry. 😍 | Mark Smith Photography

What a time to have the rarest egret in the United States photobomb a shot and try to upstage the Great Blue Heron. When I was filming this, I was so distracted by the heron and its catch that I didn’t even see the Reddish Egret jump into the frame with a fish. It actually caused the heron to pause, which made the video even more interesting. If you have seen any of the many Great Blue Heron videos that I’ve posted in the past, then you know how this is going to end for the poor fish. The fact t

I’ve spent years photographing and videoing these magnificent winged creatures that rise out of the ocean like a mystical Phoenix from the ashes. If you didn’t know, they are by far my favorite bird. Amazing animals in every sense of the word. There is one shot I’ve been trying to get forever. An Osprey just perfectly aloft in the ocean breeze. Hovering effortlessly. Yesterday with the help of some new equipment, I managed to get it. Time to make a few new upgrades to the old equipment arsenal.

As the rush of the incoming tide slows to a calm, almost inviting flow, the tension in the air lessens. The soaring eagles slow down and relax as the boat lazily meanders down the current. Having already eaten 4-5 hake fish, this eagle is intent on getting its last meal of the tide cycle, but as you can clearly see, it is calm and almost relaxed as it drops out of the queue and approaches the waterline. Gotta love those feathered pantaloons blowing in the breeze. | Mark Smith Photography
