Brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) spawning in a small tributary of Loch Ness today. These are the smallest of the three British lamprey species at approximately 130 to 150mm in length). Unlikely the larger river and sea lamprey, they spend their entire lifecycle in freshwater. The larvae of brook lamprey live in burrows in areas of sand or mud. They feed by filtering organic matter from the water. As they mature they stop feeding and migrate to areas of suitably sized clean gravel. A number of ma

How do lamprey climb? 🧗 With their mouth! Lamprey, or piharau/kanakana, don’t just use their toothy mouth for feeding, they also use it to travel upstream to breed. 👄 Adult lamprey migrate upstream in search of the perfect spawning site, using their suckermouth to climb over rocks and waterfalls. Of the over 44 lamprey species worldwide, only two are known to climb waterfalls with their body completely out of water and our native piharau is one of them. It’s thought that they use their extreme

These are ammocoetes. 🪱 Ammocoetes are the blind, worm-like larvae of lamprey. Here they are burrowing into the sediment of a stream. 🏞️ They will remain buried in the sediment for several years, filter-feeding and developing into juveniles with eyes and their unique suckermouth. Ammocoetes are considered ecological engineers because their filter feeding cleans the sediment and improves the waterways for other taonga species. 👏 From here, the juveniles head for sea where they spend the next 3

Stuff of nightmares or much-loved native? 🤨 Much-loved native of course! The owner of this toothy grin is a treasured native freshwater fish, the lamprey, Geotria australis. Don’t worry if you see these special fish in our waterways, they won’t bite you! 🦷 Why does their mouth look like that? 🤔 Lamprey spend around 3-4 years of their lives at sea. During this time, they feed parasitically, using their toothy mouth to attach themselves to fish and marine mammals and suck their blood and flesh.

The chestnut lamprey (Ichthyomyzon castaneus) is a native, jawless fish found in rivers across Michigan and the central U.S. Often confused with invasive sea lampreys, chestnut lampreys play a positive role in river ecosystems. Key Points: • Larvae live in streambeds for years, filtering water and improving quality. • Adults are temporary parasites, feeding on fish but rarely killing them. • After spawning, they die and decompose, returning nutrients to the stream. • Serve as food for fish, bird
