Meet one of our Chinese alligator hatchlings! 🐊 This little one is part of our efforts to contribute to the conservation of this critically endangered species, found only in the Yangtze River valley in China. Unfortunately, habitat loss has put this species at risk which is why we're proud to have hatchlings and raise awareness for their species. Today is National Alligator Day! Unfortunately, Chinese alligators, like Bumi, are ranked as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and there are fewer than 200 in the wild today. The populations are still rapidly declining due to extreme habitat fragmentation and loss, also, their food resources are contaminated by fertilizers and pesticides used for agriculture.
