The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is the backbone of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The C&O Canal National Historical Park runs along 184.5 miles of the Potomac, and is "book-ended" by the Great Allegheny Passage in the northwest, and the Mount Vernon Trail to the southeast. Around 9 o'clock Thursday morning a beaver was spotted in the canal just below Lock 19 (a 5 minute walk from the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center). The large adult spent time both sitting on the bank and swimming around the canal to the delight of park employees and volunteers.
