An ALLOPHONE is one of the key concepts learners need to grasp when learning phonetics. In dictionaries you will find PHONEMIC transcriptions which work on the principle of 1 SYMBOL = 1 SOUND. This is useful for spelling to sound relationships, especially for vowels. But if you want to learn more advanced pronunciation, you need to master the VARIATIONS of each phoneme. These are called ALLOPHONES. The example in this video shows 6 allophones of the phoneme /t/ in the word BUTTER. - #phonetics #
