Here are a few snippets showing the various layers that went into my Elephant painting =). I loved the challenge of this project and in particular capturing the beautiful lighting. Good contrast - dark shadows and bright highlights is what will create a more three dimensional painting or drawing so it's something I will focus on throughout the various stages. I chose to paint this lovely long haired cat to show a range of techniques. From building layers to achieve fine details and depth to the soft, out of focus fur on the body. All required the use of various brushes which are used in slightly different ways depending on the fur texture of that animal. One of my most photo realistic paintings I've created was this Giraffe. To capture such detail, the use of the right brushes is key. I'm using more smaller sized brushes here and that combined with the control and brush technique are all working towards creating really fine, intricate brush strokes. My current acrylic painting focuses on building up values to achieve sharp contrast. Working in greyscale is one of the best ways to practice this and it massively helps improve our colour based paintings. This section of the painting may be small but with the right approach and using good brush technique tiny details can be achieved. I love painting detail. It's something that I can spend hours at a time fussing over but there there comes a point in the layering process where details are not what makes something look more realistic the more that is added. Adding to many details trying to make something look more realistic can in some cases, cover to much of the layers underneath which then massively impacts the contrast. If contrast, the values, are then effected, the painting loses the depth and becomes more two dimensional
