The rains have filled the waterholes here at the sanctuary and the horses are loving it! In waterways, horses paw to test the water's depth and riverbed bottom for any hazards before they drop and roll. Rolling in water is a natural self-grooming and -cooling behavior. When the bugs are bad the horses will get wet and then roll in the dirt to give themself a layer of protection from bugs. It acts as a natural bug spray. Splashing in the water will also bring up important nutrients from the soil.
