Tlingit and Haida Warriors The Tlingit and Haida peoples, indigenous to the Pacific Northwest, were renowned for their formidable warrior cultures. Both groups engaged in complex social and military structures, with warriors trained in combat and strategic defense of their territories. The Tlingit language, rich in metaphor and deep in meaning, encodes the history, life ways, stories, and traditions of the Huna Tlingit. Widely spoken into the mid-20th century, the Tlingit language began to fade during a painful era of western acculturation. Language revitalization is critical, today there are fewer than 60 living fluent speakers. Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to the kids from the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy dance group for performing at our Native American Heritage Month celebration. It was so wonderful to watch the children dressed in their regalia, singing in the Tlingit language. In this video, the kids are singing the Language Warrior's Chant. We’re also grateful to Wooshkindeinda.aat Lily Hope for reading her book “Celebration,” which tells the story of a young girl’s trip to Juneau for the biennial dance festival.

As we look back on their legacy, Tlingit & Haida staff today talk about how they uphold those tribal values in their everyday life, showing respect, holding each other up and passing on their knowledge to the next generation. | Tlingit & Haida

Tlingit & Haida was proud to partner with the Craig Tribal Association for a culture camp where staff from our Traditional Food Security and Cultural Heritage & Education departments helped out. Kids learned how to make drums and moccasins, fillet fish and process seaweed, carve halibut hooks and make cedar roses and headbands. We love to see youth learning about their culture so they can carry on traditional ways for the next generation! The song in the video is "Just a Happy Song," composed by

The Tlingit are one of the great Indigenous nations of the Pacific Northwest—rooted for thousands of years along the coastlines, islands, and forests of what is now Southeast Alaska and parts of the Yukon. We are a maritime people, master navigators of the cold Pacific waters, salmon nations, and cedar forests. Our clans—Raven and Eagle/Wolf—carry ancestral laws, histories, and identities passed down through oral tradition, regalia, and monumental art. Our totem poles are not decorations; they a
