On this day in 1875, Georges Bizet's opera Carmen premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris. It was met with shock and disapproval, with critics describing the reception as ‘glacial’. Following Bizet's death, the opera was revived and went on to earn international acclaim and to this day continues to captivate audiences with its themes and melodies.
