August 15th is National Acadian Day – a day when Acadians celebrate their culture and heritage. The day was officially recognized by Canada in 2003 and by Nova Scotia in 2004, but it has been observed since 1881. The day is celebrated in communities with family and friends, music, food and a parade called tintamarre, where people march through the streets making noise with improvised instruments.
