The phrase “Mele Kalikimaka” originated in 1904. Though King Kamehameha IV declared Christmas a national holiday in 1862, Native Hawaiians and citizens were not familiar with the phrase until it was first published in the Hawaiian newspaper, Ka Nupepa Kuokoa.
