As the name suggests, they have tiny hair-like spines all over their bodies. These densely-packed gray or purple spines help the animal move on the ocean floor and bury itself in the sand. If the spines are moving, the sand dollar is still alive. Please make sure to put these live animals back in the water! | SSI Sea Turtle Project

Most people think dark sand dollars are always alive, but that’s not true. A sand dollar is alive if its tiny spines are still moving. No movement = it has already passed, even if it’s still dark. Just like us, it takes time for a body to break down. Remember to never take a sand dollar unless you KNOW it’s dead, and return live ones to the water. Make sure to follow local laws as sand dollars are protected in some areas, and ethical shelling matters. 🐚💫 | Lawren Bagley
