Baby harp seals, known as pups, are born on the ice in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, particularly around Canada, Greenland, and Russia. They are easily recognized by their fluffy white fur, which helps them blend into the snowy environment and stay warm. For the first few weeks of their lives, they remain on the ice, nursing from their mothers and gaining weight rapidly. Female harp seals give birth to pups on moving ice floes and suckle for just 10 to 14 days. During the last few days of this short period, they encourage the pup into the water to help them learn to swim.
