Giant trolley scales are being trialled at a Tesco store in Gateshead sparking a mixed reaction from shoppers. Trolleys are weighed before checkout to identify any items customers who have used Scan as you Shop might have missed or scanned twice.

In an attempt to thwart thefts, Tesco has resorted to placing items priced as low as £1.65 inside security boxes at one of its stores. Specifically, the Misfits Plant-Powered Protein Bar, which typically retails for £2.20 but was offered at a Clubcard price of £1.65, was seen secured within these measures in Liverpool's Park Road Tesco.

Tesco is testing large trolley scales at one of its stores - causing mixed reactions among customers. The major supermarket is set to trial a system that weighs trolleys before checkout to catch any missed or double-scanned items for those using the Scan as you Shop feature.

However in the Gateshead Trinity Square Extra store, shoppers can now push their trolley on to the scales and if the weight matches the items they've scanned they pay as normal. If there is a discrepancy a staff member will do a manual rescan of the whole trolley, reports the BBC.
