Ben Shelton has reached his first Australian Open semifinal by defeating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) in an entertaining match

Ben Shelton advanced to the semi-final of the hard court major after beating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

Since 1988, when the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park, Shelton is just the second left-handed player to reach the semi-finals of both hard court grand slams, after the great Rafael Nadal. He is also the youngest left-handed player to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since Nadal back in 2008.

The 21st seed Ben Shelton is through to his second Major semi-final at the Australian Open, the first in Melbourne. The young American ousted Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 in three hours and 50 minutes, remaining on the title course.

The big-serving American 21st seed will face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or Australia’s Alex de Minaur for a place in the final at Park.

Ben Shelton told the Australian Open fans they were allowed to "boo and throw things at my head" after advancing to the semi-final for the first time. The American defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 7-5 4-6 7-6 (4) to move into the last four and admitted it was one of his favourite matches he'd played.
