Meijer, who voted to impeach former President Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, launched a bid for the Senate in November to replace Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.).

Notably, Meijer was one of the 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted in favor of impeaching Trump due to his involvement in the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Peter Meijer has dropped out of the race for the US Senate, his campaign announced Friday. Meijer, 36, is an Iraq war veteran and grandson of the Meijer supermarket chain family.

Meijer was seen as a longshot to win the Republican Party’s nomination after voting to impeach then-President Donald Trump in 2021.

Meijer announced his candidacy in November and contended for the Republican nomination against former U.S. Reps. Mike Rogers and Justin Amash, in addition to wealthy businessman Sandy Pensler.
