Roblox has revealed plans to require facial age verification for anyone using chat features on the platform. The company called the move a new “gold standard” for online communication safety as it aims to become the first major gaming service to mandate this level of age assurance.

If Roblox users want to chat on the online gaming platform, they’ll soon have to verify their age by providing a government ID or by letting an artificial intelligence age estimation tool photograph their face.

There are certain elements to video games that can go “under the radar,” if you will, and be almost undetectable…until it somehow goes haywire, and then you say, “Great, I’m going to have to deal with this the rest of the game, now aren’t I?”

Roblox CEO David Baszucki joined CNN’s Pamela Brown to discuss new safety measures to protect young users, including AI-age verification technology. The announcement comes after a growing number of lawsuits that say the platform allegedly failed to deter sexual predators from targeting minors on the popular gaming platform.
