South Carolina airports started enforcing the use of REAL IDs at TSA checkpoints May 7. Airports like Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Columbia were ready.

New York’s REAL ID law takes effect Wednesday. Travelers who don’t have the correct form of identification will still be able to fly, but should be prepared for extra screening, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The federal REAL ID deadline is officially here — but travelers say enforcement may not be as strict as advertised. Beginning Wednesday, May 7, TSA started enforcing the long-postponed REAL ID Act, which requires a REAL ID-compliant license or federally approved ID to board domestic flights.

The long awaited deadline for the REAL ID requirement at U.S. airports has arrived, but passengers without the security measure on their identification can still pass through security, but with a catch.

REAL ID requirements for those flying within the United States begin Wednesday after nearly 20 years of delays.
