Arson could be the cause of several wind-driven brush fires that burned on New York’s Long Island over the weekend, injuring two firefighters and sending large smoke plumes into the air, officials said.

Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Rudy Sunderman said the fire will not be considered completely "contained" until 10-foot breaks are built around the full perimeter of the fire, where combustible materials and elements are removed to prevent it from reigniting and spreading.

As investigators work to identify the origin of the recent New York wildfires, red flag warnings were issued across the central U.S.

The cause of the wildfires that swept through part of Long Island, New York, over the weekend is believed to have been a resident making s'mores, police said.

Two commercial buildings were partially burned, but officials said homes were not in the line of fire.

Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a burn ban for Long Island, New York City and the Hudson Valley following the large wildfires.
