The first widespread snowfall of winter has hit Metro Vancouver, with Environment Canada warning the ongoing wintry blast could eventually bring up to 25 centimetres to start off a frigid week.

Residents of Metro Vancouver woke up to the first significant snow dump of the winter season on Sunday, as forecasters warn of further snow to come overnight.

An incoming winter storm could bring snowsqualls and up to 20 centimetres of snow to parts of Vancouver Island including Greater Victoria, east Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands and the Malahat Highway,

Environment Canada is warning of snow and wintry weather for B.C.'s South Coast starting Saturday night, in what will be the region's first widespread snowfall of the season.

A blanket has fallen across Vancouver, but its thickness varies Environment Canada Philippe-Alain Bergeron meteorologist tells V.I.A. So far only 3 cm has fallen at Vancouver's airport, but there's been an unofficial measurement of 9 cm downtown, and 15 cm measured in West Vancouver.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says a wintry mix of weather conditions is expected to impact the South Coast of B.C. through Monday morning. The federal weather agency says the highest amounts will likely occur over higher terrain, but other areas may see locally intense flurries.

The 51st Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade felt a little wintery this year. The annual parade celebrating the Lunar New Year took place in Chinatown on Sunday, Feb. 2, as people marched through the snow after the city saw a couple of inches of the white stuff fall overnight.
